Apple profits: Company's record-breaking numbers beat expectations as sales of new plus-sized iPhones boom

Apple has recorded the biggest quarterly profits ever made by a public company, as sales of its new plus-sized spiked over Christmas.

Apple said on Tuesday that it sold 74.5 million iPhones during the three months that ended on 31 December, beating all predications about the new device, which was introduced in September.

The Associated Press said that the surge in sale of the phones drove the company’s total revenue to $74.6bn, up 30 per cent from a year earlier. Net profit rose 38 per cent to $18bn, as Apple reported earnings of $3.06 a share.

DRI unearths Rs 29,000cr coal import scam

Sleuths Raid 80 Firms Across Several States

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has unearthed a scam involving companies inflating the value of coal imports from Indonesia for their power plants thus siphoning money abroad. Initial estimates by the agency pegged the overvaluation at Rs 29,000 crore between 2011 and 2014. DRI has raided more than 80 shipping companies, intermediaries and laboratories in Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala, among other states, in search of documents that show the real value of the imports. The agency has searched almost all laboratories testing coal in India to obtain reports for verification of the calorific value of the imported coal.

Diesel use rising fast in capital, so is air pollution

Consumption of diesel in Delhi has been increasing steadily since 2010 while that of petrol is declining. Simultaneously , air pollution--especially the concentrations of PM 2.5 (fine, respirable particles) and PM 10 (coarse pollution particles) --is on the rise.
Diesel consumption peaked in Delhi in 2007-08 at 13.94 lakh metric tonnes but then declined to 8 lakh tonnes in 2010, possibly due to higher taxes on the fuel. But it has been rising sharply again since 2011. In 2012-13 it stood at 10.29 lakh tonnes and reached 11.29 lakh tonnes in 201314, a 10% increase.
Particulate matter (PM) is associated with diesel emissions. Analysis by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) shows PM10 levels have increased by about 75% since 2005 with occasional dips.

SpiceJet gets 10 days to raise funds or face end

The Centre has given a final chance to cashstrapped SpiceJet to survive, asking the low cost carrier to raise funds within the next 10 days, possibly from promoter Sun Group chief Kalanithi Maran, or face closure.
The respite came on Monday after the SpiceJet management, led by COO Sanjiv Kapoor and Sun Group CFO S L Narayanan, reportedly told aviation authorities it would shut “tonight or in 30 days“ unless the Centre saved it from payment demands of oil firms and airport operators. SpiceJet told minister of state Mahesh Sharma that its immediate cash requirement was Rs 1,400 crore and the overall requirement (including long term) Rs 2,000 crore.

Petrol, diesel cut by Rs.2 a litre each in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) With international crude oil rates slipping towards $60 a barrel, state-run oil marketeers Monday cut petrol and diesel rates further each by Rs.2 a litre in Delhi, effective midnight.

Allowing for local levies, the prices of transport fuels will decrease correspondingly in other states, Indian Oil Corp said in a statement here.

"The prices of petrol and diesel were last revised downwards w.e.f. 1st December'14 by Rs. 0.91/ litre and Rs. 0.84/ litre respectively (including state levies at Delhi) on the back of declining international oil prices," it added.

In October, the government deregulated diesel prices by linking the fuel cost to market-based pricing.

The price of the Indian basket crude oil on the last trading day Friday was $60.58 per barrel. A barrel is equal to 159 litres.

The falls pushed the rupee to a new 10-1/2 month low against the dollar on Monday, in a session when the Indonesian rupiah hit a 16-year low amidst a slump in crude prices and worries about U.S. rate hikes expected next year.
