4,000 calls swamp Kejri graft helpline

New Delhi: On Day One, the anti-graft helpline launched by the Kejriwal government was swamped, receiving 3,904 calls by 3pm on Thursday. By evening, the number of calls had crossed 4,000 and two complaints had reached the anticorruption branch with initial evidence gathered through ‘sting operations’. The branch claimed it was gearing up to trap the alleged bribe-seekers within a day.
CM Arvind Kejriwal said an overwhelmed call centre staff could only attend to 824 calls due to heavy congestion in the line. Of these, 53 were found to be ‘genuine’ calls where specific complaints against officials were mentioned. He said 15 such callers refused to conduct stings.

“Given the response, we are increasing the seats from 15 to 30 and channels from 30 to 60 by tomorrow. We are also launching a four-digit number in few days,” he added.

CM refuses to give details
The chief minister refused to divulge details such as the department against which the maximum calls were received. Government officials even maintained secrecy about the location of the call centre, saying they do not want ‘corrupt officials’ to approach those working there. “To maintain the integrity of the call centre we do not want to disclose its location,” said Kejriwal. The CM was quick to laud the “high quality” sting operations received by the department. “I would like to congratulate Delhiites for the quality of sting operations being conducted by them. He said with the launch of this helpline, every Delhiite had become empowered to catch a corrupt official who would harass them. The CM also used the opportunity to boost the morale of officers, saying he has always maintained that “most officers here are honest but are not given the right opportunities”.
